New Book! Tūtūʻs Secret

Aloha🌺

My new book "Tūtūʻs Secret" is here! Written by Gloria Blum, published by Island Heritage. The book I will remember illustrating with fond memory. I received this manuscript a few month after I became tūtū (grandmother) myself and illustrated while my husband and I drove to see her weekly to south Kona. Driving more than 3 hours round trip each week, the view and feeling of south Kona became the inspiration for this illustration. I wanted to illustrate many Hawaiian native plants and animals to communicate Tūtūʻs memories from Old Hawaiʻi, kind of the feeling I still get in south Kona.

When I first read the manuscript, I wanted to wove and celebrate the kaloʻs life cycle in my illustration (even that was not actually written in the story). I wanted to use growing kalo as a symbol of ʻohana. I wanted to illustrate the tūtūʻs wisdom that is passed on to her moʻopuna (grandchildren) still live in them and they can live the wisdom and pass on to the next generation, just like how each kalo makua (parents) plant produce many keiki plants..I hope keiki will notice a little kalo planted by tūtū and Lani in the story keep growing to the last page full of multiple kalo.  Mahalo ke Akua.

New Book! Pop-Up Dollhouse

 Aloha! 🌈🌺

I had privilege to collaborate with Hawaii's toy company Keiki Kaukau, and illustrate "Hale Laureʻa: Pop-Up Dollhouse" inspired by mid-century plantation homes in Hawai'i🏝 The book will open up to 4 rooms: lanai, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.

I hope keiki will look for many little ethnic items of Old Hawai'i, I illustrated with great details and love and hid under flaps.

Keiki Heroes project

Last few weeks, I had the privilege to work with community design team on "Keiki Heroes" project, that to help children in Hawai'i to cope with covid-19, based on the values of kindness and compassion.
I was asked to do in comic style, so it's my first experience. Our first phase is almost done, and two designs of posters/flyers were delivered to various schools and libraries. Free coloring pages will be available soon from keikiheroes.org
Praying for children during this difficult times.

New! 10 Little Geckos: Hawaiian Count-Down

Juggling with my day job of being a high school teacher and doing all my art things is sometimes...challenging, but I am so so thankful to God for these beautiful and colorful experiences in my life.

My newest book "10 Little Geckos: Hawaiian Count-Down: is finally here! I'm so excited to see this book came out very beautifully and cute:) The book is Hawaiian version of a popular count-down rhyme and I had this idea about 7 years ago or so... and wrote it, edit it, illustrated it, modified it many times...to this one! As usual with all my recent books, I merged both hand-drawn elements and digital collage, and the funnest part of illustrating this book was to incorporate the fun-messy-textures to the background.

10 Little Geckos is an adorable Little Rainbow Reader book that teaches young children counting in an engaging and colorful way. The book follows ten multicolored geckos and their adventures under the Hawaiian sun. They visit their friends all throughout the islands including a dolphin, a mynah bird, and even a hula dancing girl! 10 Little Geckos follows an engaging rhyming pattern that tells a cute story while making it easier for children to memorize numbers. Each page also features the Hawaiian word for the numbers one through ten. It is sure to be a favorite among keiki! Hardcover. 23 pages. Available from welcometotheislands.com  $12.95, and soon from Amazon.

Whale Tales

Whale Tales
by Ron Hirschi
illustrated by Yuko Green
(c) 2015 Island Heritage
ISBN: 1-61710-280-6

Whale Tales is a fictional non-fiction children's book, told as Lehua and Kai write letters to their whale-loving friends during their voyage on the research ship following the annual migration of humpback whales. The reader can learn about the great sea mammals and other sea creatures as they follow Lehua and Kai document the adventure of the humpbacks as they begin their trek from the feeding grounds of Alaska and cruise to the warm waters of Hawai'i to give birth to their calves.

This book is my 3rd collaborated work with Mr. Ron Hirschi: a biologist, ocean ecologist and teacher. Mr. Hirschi and I worked on another whale book Winter is for Whale about ten years ago.  Illustrating Whale Tales renewed my love for Hawaiian nature all over.

This book will be translated to Japanese early this year! It is first time my book will be translated to another language, so I'm very excited! :)
32 pages, 9.5" x 10.25". $13.95 from Island Heritage.
